Animals of every sort, she wrote, covered the plains in every direction the eye could look. They were doing all the things animals do ~ eating, sleeping, playing, taking the sun. Leopards over here, gazelles right over there.
There were so many of them that, unless one of the meat-eaters happened at the moment to be showing signs of hunger, quite simply, nobody worried about it. None of them had any problem getting along with the others. When hunger signs did manifest (much, much less often than the three times every day human predators think they have to eat), everybody just got out of its way as best they could. Then life went back to its normal mode: peace.

These authors recount that almost without exception the weather was already changing as the village’s dowsers and ancient new-age energy-workers were still on the way back from their gathering for that purpose. In the unusual instance in which this did not occur a second gathering was scheduled, which in every case save one only in the memory of any author did the job.
